lab technician


Desired results of the job:

Responsible for performing verifiable quality sampling oil testing and prepare laboratory reports at various work sites; ensure all work is carried out in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, by assessing all procedures before they are performed and regularly reviewing the assessments to ensure risks are kept to the lowest level. This position is customer service oriented; must be self-motivated; excellent communication skills and have the ability to work well independently and in team environments.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Operation of Lab Facility

  • Perform sample testing (sulfur, chlorides, gravity and pour point test) on all sale loads, and internal transfer loads prior to pick-up using established tests and techniques
  • Travel to Satellite locations to collect oil samples and bring to primary site to conduct testing on an as needed basis
  • Responsible to log in results and maintain up-to-date reports and other documentation; properly use personal computer for entering and accessing lab information and procedures
  • Ensure all testing samples meets spec requirements; if specs are outside guidelines communicate directly with Operations team on results or sample issues
  • Ensure proper turn-over by providing effective communications to the relieving shift supervisor
  • Retain and dispose of samples according to procedures
  • Responsible for ensuring proper inventory levels are kept

Maintenance and Equipment

  • Perform basic preventative maintenance on instruments, including but not limited to, changing septums and inserts; measuring and adjusting flows; cleaning and/or changing electrodes; calibration and warranty issues
  • Ensure laboratory equipment are maintained and kept clean

Training

  • Assist in training employees on sampling procedures to ensure process consistency
  • Ensure training is in compliance with regulatory requirements

Safety

  • Participate in efforts to continuously improve laboratory performance in safety, quality, reliability, and costs; ensure data and instrument integrity, and report any equipment irregularities

Compliance

  • Ensure proper laboratory procedures are followed to ensure environmental compliance; assist in the implementation of improvements
  • Ensure all environmental incidents are promptly and properly reported to management, investigated, and documented and that corrective action items are completed within appropriate time frames.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned and in accordance with established Company policies to achieve overall objectives of this position.

 

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in lab operations or similar discipline
  • Experience with chemical sample preparation and/or analysis
  • Knowledge of basic math (add, subtract, multiply and divide)
  • Highly organized
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to follow detailed, technical instructions
  • Experience with tedious, or repetitive motions or tasks
  • Proficiency in the application of computerized systems, including standard business applications (i.e. MS Office)
  • Ability to work outdoors; exposed to changing weather conditions, extreme hot and cold (for instance, rain, sun, snow, wind, etc.)
  • Standing, particularly for sustained periods of time
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, goggles, safety glasses, hard hats, safety boots, and ear plugs/muffs as required
  • Substantial movements (motion) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers in a repetitive manner
  • Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus)
  • Ability to work various shifts based on the business needs of the Company, including weekends
